One Time Out is a Chicago-based trio led by saxophonist, improviser, and composer Michael Hudson-Casanova. Formed in 2025, the trio explores Hudson-Casanova’s highly melodic original music in addition to compositions by ECM artists such as Kenny Wheeler, Bill Frisell, Carla Bley, and Paul Motian.
This ensemble approaches improvisation less like a traditional jazz trio and more like a group of chamber musicians. Their sound can be dark and rounded or fiery and pointed, as they’ve become comfortable subverting each other’s expectations on the bandstand as curious improvisers often do.
Drummer Adam Shead lays a colorful and polyrhythmic foundation for the trio while guitarist Andrew Sudhibhasilp offers a great range of sonic textures from an intricate effects pedal setup. Hudson-Casanova is “a mature composer, a democratic bandleader… as well as an innovative improviser” (Hrayr Attarian, All About Jazz).
One Time Out recently recorded their first studio album which will be highly anticipated in 2027.
